Astronomy at Whiting
In a two-part mini-series, members of the Southern Vermont Astronomy Group (SoVerA) are inviting the community
to the Whiting Library, where they’ll be describing some of the basics of astronomy, and answering any questions you
may have. Then, if the skies cooperate, after either one of the presentations, binoculars and telescopes will be set up
for participants to observe celestial objects in our Vermont skies.
Astronomy Basics - Telescopes 6:00 PM Thursday, 23 October
Here, we will enjoy a simple review of how telescope optics work, what to consider when thinking of purchasing
backyard telescopes or binoculars, and we’ll also look at the massive new research telescopes about to be
commissioned in the great dry deserts, which may well rip open our current understanding of the universe. This will be
a hands-on demonstration and discussion open to anyone, and especially for those who may have an interest in using
either their own- or the Whiting Telescope, which you can check out for free. No prior experience required.
Astronomy Basics – The Sky 6:00 PM Saturday, 25 October
Then, tonight, we’ll learn the basics of how to find things in the sky, and during which season and time to best look for
them. We’ll talk of some of the better on-line sources for accurate, current information about what’s going on in the sky,
and sources for the most reliable, deeper background information for those who wish to pursue more information.
