Get excited for Astronomy on Tap at Bickerson’s Brewhouse in Ballard at 7pm! This month we have two graduating PhD Candidates talk about their exciting thesis work studying galactic atmospheres and binary stars! Each FREE Astronomy on Tap event features an accessible, engaging science presentations on topics ranging from planets to black holes to the beginning of the Universe. Most events have games and prizes to test and reward your new-found knowledge! There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably stick around for the beer. Be sure to follow us on Twitter (@AoTSeattle), Instagram (@aotseattle), TikTok (@astroontapseattle) and here on Facebook to get updates on future events! Can’t make it to our event in person? Have no fear because you can always catch the live stream on our YouTube account or rewatch past favorites (https://www.youtube.com/@astronomyontapseattle2986/streams)! ————– Speaker Bios: Speaker: Sam Garza Title: Space is Soup and I’m a Fork: Using Cosmic Ingredients to Study Galactic Atmospheres Bio: Samantha Garza is a fourth year Astronomy PhD Candidate and ARCS Fellow at the University of Washington. She has previously studied the inner arms of the Milky Way, the relationship between how fast stars are forming and annoying dust particles, and (her favorite galaxy) the Whirlpool Galaxy. She currently researches the atmospheres of galaxies to further our understanding of how galaxies evolve over time. In addition to research, she loves serving the public through outreach and is an organizer and active educator for several initiatives at UW (e.g., Astronomy on Tap, eSTEAM, UW Planetarium). In her free time she enjoys crafting, playing volleyball, learning how to figure skate, and baking for her friends. Speaker: Tom Wagg Title: A Journey through a Galaxy of Binaries Bio: Tom is a 4th year PhD student and potentially a newly minted Dr. by the time he’ll give this presentation. He loves stars, but loves them even more when there’s two together in a binary. He’ll tell you all about why binaries are fascinating and how they are impactful across a variety of astrophysics in this talk, which describes his PhD thesis work. When he’s not doing astronomy or frolicking around campus, you’ll find him playing field hockey, climbing, unnecessarily jumping over large objects and saying painfully British things like “I’m on it like a car bonnet mate”.
