Join USGS geologist, Amber Gullikson, for a guided hike to the Cinder Lake Crater Field where the Apollo astronauts trained, and where current and future astronauts still do field geology training. A 3.5-mile hike across flat, uneven terrain with loose volcanic cinders. Bring sturdy shoes, a hat, jacket, sunscreen, water, and snacks. Not suitable for young children or dogs. Reservation required. Landfill Road Trailhead. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Reservations will be enabled on September 5th.     Part of Flagstaff Festival of Science, a free annual 10-day event wholly designed to promote awareness and enthusiasm for science in and about northern Arizona and beyond, and is fondly known as the Best 10 Days of the Year. Established in 1990, it is the longest, continuously running, entirely free science festival in the world.
