More Information
Prof. Elliot Horch, from Southern Connecticut State University, will be giving a free public science talk on interferometry (a technique that uses the interference of waves, such as light or water waves, to extract information about an object - very useful in astronomy!).
The talk is September 23rd at GSU's campus, 55 Park Place, at 4:30pm in room 1242.
Interferometry for All: A Story of High-Resolution Astronomical Imaging in Miniature
In the last decades, optical and infrared interferometry have provided astronomers with a wealth of fundamental, high-precision information about the diameters and shapes of stars and other objects. This talk is about using ground-based telescopes – accessible at smaller universities and observatories – that can serve as the basis of small, portable long-baseline optical interferometry systems. Some successes of these smaller-scale approaches will be discussed, and their potential for the future will be outlined.
This talk is part of an annual series: Each year, Georgia State University hosts the Nelson Lecture, a free public science talk featuring a noteworthy and impactful scientific researcher.
