More Information

Citizen science depends on volunteers capturing where and when invasive species occur. But pulling out a phone, opening an app, and filling in a form takes long enough that observations get skipped or forgotten. Naughtweed removes that friction.

Users carry a small IoT button (i.e., Bluetooth clicker) paired to their phone. When they recognize an invasive species, a single press records a timestamped, geotagged observation in 0.1 seconds: no app to open, no form to fill out, no photos to take.

Three press sequences (click, double click, and click + hold) let each users define assign click types with any non-native invasive species of interest; this pattern works anywhere a momentary geospatial data point is the unit of observation, and the system works offline.

No experience is necessary! Just curiosity and a willingness to look closely at what’s around you. Because logging takes a single click, volunteers can contribute on any walk, bike ride, or kayak trip without slowing down. Every entry helps build the kind of dense, timely dataset that ecological and municipal decisions actually depend on.

Getting started: Flic buttons are available on our website (with silicone wristband included) or on Amazon (no wristband…).

Not ready to buy a dedicated field kit (2-pack, on sale now…) for under $100? Check your local library: many lend Flic buttons as part of a community kit. If yours doesn’t yet, reach out and we’ll help them get set up.

OR, you can get set up with our app and use the Action button on an iPhone - it works just the same!
