More Information
Some fish have been observed using hard surfaces as tools to help them break open hard-shelled prey like sea urchins or shells. After grabbing the prey in its mouth, the fish slams it quickly and repeatedly on the hard surface until it breaks. The project aims to determine where and which species are able to do this behaviour. This information will allow to test hypotheses regarding the evolution of tool use, such as that tool use only evolves in species with large brains.
