More Information

Drop in at The Lansdown for an out of this world evening of astronomy! Our inaugural Bristol event will feature talks from Joe Hall, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, who will teach us about “The Whys and Hows of X-ray Astronomy” and Teresa Matamoro, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, discussing “The secret life of accreting Black Holes”. We will have a fun quiz and maybe even some prizes!

The event is FREE and all are welcome!

The Whys and Hows of X-ray Astronomy – Joe Hall

The universe has an appointment at the radiology department! In this talk I will explain a brief history of the field, how our telescopes create images from light emitted by distant objects, and explore why these images matter and what we can learn when we look beyond the visible range. From clusters of galaxies to black holes, and even planets around distant stars X-rays are continuing to prove themselves as a key part in an astronomer’s toolkit to diagnose the mysteries of the universe.

The secret life of accreting Black Holes – Teresa Matamoro

Black holes have a reputation for being terrifying objects in the universe that devour anything that gets too close. But that’s only half the story, as black holes are also the architects of galaxies. They don’t just consume matter from galaxies; they also feed and shape them! Through powerful jets and energetic winds, black holes influence the evolution of their host galaxies. In this talk, I’ll give an introduction of what black holes are, why they are important, and how we can study and even photograph them!
